Ipswich Green Party support Occupy London's demands to democratise City of London
30th October 2011
Since Saturday 15th October a diverse group of activists descended on the City of London with the intention of occupying the London Stock Exchange. They are united by their desire to tackle corporate greed, growing inequality, unemployment, tax injustice and a political elite out of touch with the public.
Last week, according to the Guardian,
the Occupy London protesters put together their first set of demands;
to democratise the Corporation of the City of London. The Corporation
operates outside of the Greater London Authority, unique to all of
the other boroughs of London. As a consequence, the City enjoys it's
own police force, a right to demand a meeting with the Prime Minister
within ten days, the right to demand a meeting with the Queen within
one week and special status under the Freedom of Information Act.
Prior to the Occupy London
demonstration, the Green Party voted during it's autumn conference in
September to work to abolish the City of London Corporation for
precisely the same reasons. During the conference, Jenny Jones, the
Green candidate for Mayor of London in 2012 said:
"The City of London Corporation is
a medieval institution. It plays a key role in protecting offshore
business that drains billions out of developing countries each year.
What we have is a divided capital, and we need to abolish that
division, and make the City of London more open and democratic."
Ipswich Green Party stands in
solidarity with the Occupy London protesters to create a more
democratic City of London.
