Green Party opposes Council's
'squeeze' on Ipswich Buses
1st Feb 2007
The council's decision to take £1 million away from Ipswich Buses is
a move in the wrong direction. Ipswich Buses should have the freedom and funds
to upgrade their fleet as soon as possible so that it offers a value service
both in terms of reliability to customers and a cleaner environment.
Our town is over congested; we need to get our roads
breathing again. We cannot do that by cutting public
transport. Commitment to public transport is a commitment
to the local economy, the environment and social need.
Encouraging people to get out of their cars and into
public transport is imperative for a successful, sustainable
community. Not only are there emission concerns with
unnecessary car journeys but safety and lifestyle issues
as well. Many constituents are reliant on public transport
for mobility to and from work; to shops and services
and for a safe journey home after a night out. This
will affect people and families across the town. If
we are also to have a university in the town then the
students must feel like they can leave their cars at
home. A visit to any university town like Norwich or
Manchester will show how vital public transport is
to the students and the general population.
There are certain challenges that we face as a society
that can be easily overcome by joined up thinking from
leaders in Council, businesses and the Government.
This is a clear of example of what happens when political
parties who have only just painted on their 'green'
veneer are put in charge. Their true colours soon shine
through. Only true Green will do.
